The Crayon Years

Emily and I had a little father/daughter time tonight. We went to Sonic (her choice) and PetSmart (her dog needs another 50lb bag of food). We started the ride by listening to her iPod. We each got one earbud. It was fun listening and commenting on the songs. Some songs were added because I liked the song. Others were added because Aunt Shannon liked the songs. So on and so forth. We stopped listening while we ate dinner in the car. Then, Emily asked a question. "Daddy, if someone breaks into the house would we get a stepmom... very long pause ...... or would we call the police and ask them to find her?"

At least she gave me 2 options. I assured her that we live in a safe neighborhood and that the chances are very slim that anyone would break into our home. Jasper is a Weimerainer. But yes, we would call the police and ask them to find her.

So, Julie had to attend a funeral on New Years's Eve. I stayed home with the kids. All three of them. Yes, THREE.

Emily is 6 years-old and Keith is 3 years-old.







And Jasper is 11 months-old.

That is where I am supposed to sleep. Notice that Julie is surrounded by Miti (13 year-old step-cat and not really my child), Emily, Keith, and Jasper. They started out in different beds but had assembled by 2am.

CORRECTION Miti is 14 years-old.

Heavy rain today. We could not work outside so I was able to go with Julie to pick the kids up.

Emily was first. She got in with great excitement because she had made a calendar in school today. Emily colored a picture to represent each month and glued the pictures in a grid pattern. She admitted that August was not labeled because the teacher was not able to make enough copies of the words. She had me look at it and we talked briefly about how nice the colors were. A whole lot of oohs and ahas, compliments and commendations. We spent several minutes talking about all of the features of the calendar and then Emily asked that I hand the calendar back to her.

Then Julie asked her the standard question, "What did you do at school today?" Momentary pause and then the answer "Well, I made this calendar......(long pause)....... and did some other stuff I don't want to talk about." If you could have heard her tone of voice. I am glad Julie was driving because I was laughing so hard my eyes watered.

Honestly woman, were you even listening?

Today is the wife's birthday. As the kids were getting up this morning, I decided that for her birthday we would go as a family to breakfast. Had a wonderful time at the IHOP.

However, like her mother, our daughter Emily is slow to get going in the morning. Keith and I had some time to kill. One of us decided to eat chocolate pudding for breakfast. From the photograph in this post, you should be able to tell which one...
